OK, as far as I know, record presses (even now) use steam to heat the dies before pressing, then use cooling water run thru the dies to solidify the material before removal.
The size comparisons some have noted as some presses being small, is merely the difference between manual (hand) operated presses and all the automation and gee-gaws of late model presses that operate without human touch. Taking in a puck, labels, pressing record cooling record and depositing it on a spindle stack.
