People use this forum for this purpose - information gathering just to sell something - all the time. When someone here questions those motives by nonmember posters, other members often criticize that as unwelcoming or rude. Nevertheless, at least it was offered here for sale first, and even eventually with a hard price. As someone who has tried to sell things here before, one can’t just wait forever for a truly interested buyer to come along, especially as the wait becomes all the more tedious as the price gets lower and lower, while some just kick the tires and play the lowball games.
This is also true. However, there were just yesterday and today additional parts being discovered. There may have been people here helping out and waiting to see how complete this would get before pulling the trigger. 15 days ago this guy didn't even realize what he had.
I can see both sides. I think it was bad sportsmanship to never mention this was happening, though... especially when agreeing with posters encouraging him to keep this here rather than going to eBay. That said, money instantly shoots any sort of sportsmanship right in the buttocks these days.
Wonder if Nick will ever even bother to change this ad to 'sold'?

Check the two links.
This phonograph was sold twice by the same seller for two drastically different prices!
My question is how could this happen?

I'm guessing the $400 sale was a mistake and was cancelled, re-listed, then sold for the actual price. Especially given that the first listing's description just says "Victor 6 Phonograph. Condition is New. Shipped with USPS First Class Package."
In all fairness, it was listed here for quite some time with no interest.

Quoted... "When someone here questions those motives by nonmember posters, other members often criticize that as unwelcoming or rude."
I have found this to be very true. As much as we all desire to develop positive vibes and relationships with the other, it does seem as though if someone has an observation which may be a tad bit diverse to the crowd, out come the hammers and the witch-hunt ensues.
I have no idea who the guy is that posted this machine. However, it seems to me that it is a cut and dry case of someone who had not a clue what he had...had zero invested in it...didn't give a rats a#$ about the family heirloom significance of it...reached out to garner as much free assistance as he could possibly acquire...expected on this forum to gain more money than it is worth in the current condition...promote it in multiple arenas...and then smile all the way to the bank. End of story.
As far as the eBay listing...I imagine someone ripped off his photo and tried to list the machine as theirs in the common eBay crookery that occurs every day. So, as a phonograph community that promotes itself to educating the unknowing person - we did our job here. If someone here was looking to purchase the machine to restore and keep for themselves...unless you could have gotten the price down, you were wasting your time. If someone here was looking to purchase the machine to "fix up" to resale...unless you could have gotten the price down, you were wasting your time. Oh wait...I just said that!!
I do get it though. The initial posting was a bit representative of a "show me your highest desire and let's play with this" campaign. I believe the entire ordeal may be summed up best when I saw the separate posting for the Victrola IV id plate being posted as "Inquire".

Bright side: he used a screen shot of the forum on the eBay ad. What great advertising for us!

Free advertising is great for sure...
I think that Nick did what anyone would do or more. He posted for info which you all helped with. He offered it here and was reprimanded about the "inquire" If you dont like it then change the rule since he followed it and then people made rude comments. He listed it here for over a week at the eBay price, Then he lowered it a good bit for US and still no buyer. He did post in the other sub-forum about it going to ebay. He again followed the rules by not posting the ebay link in this post.
Did he use this group for advertising his piece? Yes.
Did he forget to mark it sold here? Yes but we all know that buyers back out all the time so maybe he wants to complete the sale before marking it sold.
I am a glass half full person. Lets not make it so negative against him. I don't like when people ask for info and value then disappear. He actually offered it here instead of disappearing and going right to eBay.
Thats only my personal view. Anyone could have bought it before he listed it. No one did.
Not his problem

I agree! We're here (hopefully) to help with queries, especially we should be supportive of new members, whether they're in it for the long haul, or just visiting.
Best,
