Well, to begin with, you did start with some drama. A “sad, sad day” is the title of your post. One could only assume that you were a complete novice and bereft at the possibility of facing such a high charge for shipping. Also, no description of the horn was given, elsewise any one of a number of us could have calculated the actual shipping costs.

I’ve been shipping stuff world-wide for almost 50 years and have gladly shared my knowledge of money-saving tricks with many collectors and even my competitors. Like I said, there’s more to it than just a click of the mouse, and that’s just telling it like it is. Sometimes we condescending old timers have valuable information to share, Don’t be so quick to reject advice that is meant in the best of intentions

Sorry I didn't know that was gonna cause drama. I work on the railroad and that's a common thing we say when we're told we're going to sit and wait for hours so forgive me for any drama my title accidentally caused. If I knew it would be taken so literal I wouldn't have used it.

And I did say it was original horn in my post. I'm novice enough to think that the straight horns are what came with it. And no one really asked to make me think otherwise

Just a thought. I don’t know if it’s feasible but they have an auction coming up in Missouri. You might ask if they could bring it with them to Missouri and make arrangements or drive down and pick it up. Don’t know if they can, but if they would, it would save you $600.

It's worth a shot

Well I didn't really want to prolong this thread, yet feel obliged to. Today FedEx delivered my small phonograph from Stanton's. I hadn't set out to bid online for this machine but when bidding stalled I couldn't resist... . The box (24x19x19) was clearly marked fragile yet looked like the NY Giants offensive line - all beat up with holes in it. Despite this, the phonograph was untouched. It was superbly wrapped and cleverly arranged to maximize protection and minimize the space taken up. The shipping wasn't cheap ($250 including material and taxes), but in the end worth it. I could have paid $50 more for double boxing or $75 less for a smaller box and was given the choice. So good job to Pak Mail and their staff.

I received my other things from them too. Did a great job packing them. Sent the horn back to Stanton's though. Hopefully someone gets it next time around!
