I think that Nick did what anyone would do or more. He posted for info which you all helped with. He offered it here and was reprimanded about the "inquire" If you dont like it then change the rule since he followed it and then people made rude comments. He listed it here for over a week at the eBay price, Then he lowered it a good bit for US and still no buyer. He did post in the other sub-forum about it going to ebay. He again followed the rules by not posting the ebay link in this post.
Did he use this group for advertising his piece? Yes.
Did he forget to mark it sold here? Yes but we all know that buyers back out all the time so maybe he wants to complete the sale before marking it sold.

I am a glass half full person. Lets not make it so negative against him. I don't like when people ask for info and value then disappear. He actually offered it here instead of disappearing and going right to eBay.

Thats only my personal view. Anyone could have bought it before he listed it. No one did.

I agree with Kirk. I corresponded with Nick several times through PM to provide some help and pictures of the parts he could be looking for. I contacted him after some of the negative comments were made early in the process. (Thank you Brandon for doing the "housekeeping" as you put it.)
I let Nick know right up front that I was not a buyer on this machine-- (I have a wonderful VI in my collection) I was helping him navigate territory that was new to him. He had no idea what he had found. In those PM's he asked many questions that made it evident that he was walking new ground. After several exchanges I gave him my "if it were mine" appraisal and suggested he enter a price rather than simply "inquire", which he did. He also continued to search for remaining pieces that could be found. It was listed on TMF for nearly two weeks with updates on parts as they were found and a $500 price reduction, without much interest being shown by TMF members. Then, Nick posted it on EBAY and it sold, apparently for $3750.
The most common answer to questions we receive about value is "it's worth what someone is willing to pay".. Well, someone was willing to pay $3750, so it was 'worth' that. Who can blame Nick for wanting to realize as much as possible for for a treasure he uncovered?
I find no foul here at all. Nick turned to TMF for help, many members gave him great suggestions and encouragement. He offered a very restorable machine to our community for nearly two weeks. No one bit, so it was sold on Ebay. More power to him--
Most importantly, by turning to TMF and getting information, another machine may have been saved from the trash pile.

Well stated. I had several private messages with Nick about his machine. He has been a super nice guy, very honest and very thankful for the advice I gave him. We had our chance and decided not to buy it, he wanted to sell it, and if you read why, it's NOT because he didn't give "a rat's ass" about his family history, it's because the family wants to use the money to care his grandmother. I'm happy for him.

My question is how could this happen?

I really don't understand how my original question was construed as an attack on this person?
This person has every right to ask questions and receive answers on this forum.
Like Brandon said, "He followed all the rules". He gave us opportunity to purchase the machine from him, and after a week, told us that he would be listing his machine "on auction"!

Back to my original question:
As an Ebay seller, I became very concerned when I saw this item being listed again as a "buy-it-now" for $400, with a clearly ripped off internet picture. The thing that concerned me most is that the scammer somehow was using the original sellers ID and account!
Are the scammers now so sophisticated that they can now set up a "shell" with your account info, and then route the funds to themselves???
If this is the case, everyone who sells on Ebay is now at risk!

I meant nothing to be about you and your post. I don’t really know much about the whole process and scam on eBay that you were talking about but I know a very well-known scam artist on eBay for antique radios. This guy will sell a radio that will normally go for $200 and get a high bid of $2000. About a month later it will be relisted because his shill bidder of course doesn’t buy it. They are just bidding to drive up the price. You can actually pay people around the world to bid on your item for five dollars through different websites. I’ve never seen one of his listings and with less than 25 bids in low increments. I would say 80% of his sold items are we listed until he finds a sucker who is willing to pay more than the last shill. I have had my pictures stolen for radio that I sold on eBay. I contacted eBay and they took the photos down. Of course they never tell you what happened to that seller but he still active.

With all the weirdness of the listings you posted, I’m thinking big scam Or a seller who didn’t know the value and after it sold someone contacted him telling him the real value so he canceled the sale. Then of course relisted for a Ton more

Something is not right with this situation.
I told Nick I was interested and asked for specific pictures.
I think he was just trying to get as much info as he could to get the highest price.
The fact that it remains unsold at $3250 May wake him up to the fact that we are not trying to “lowball” him.
Prices are way down on these machines. I doubt he will get any legitimate offers at his asking price for a machine known to be missing parts. Lord only knows what might need to be done to get this fine machine into good condition.
As he said, he’s in no hurry.
