Norman,

I love your blue color, label and the idea that it will look unmistakeably Edison DD if it has both sides.

But, if an Edison DD copy were a single, thinner, disc , wouldn't that throw off the reproducer since it is factory set to play a thick disc and the stylus won't touch the record?

Or, would it simply be a thick disc with only one tune?

Just wondering.

Billybob,
You are correct that the discs need to be ¼" thick in order for the reproducer to sit properly on it.
I don't want to speak for Norman, but has I previously mentioned, making a double sided mold isn't twice as difficult as a single sided mold, it's ten times more difficult... and a heck of a lot more expensive. If the goal is to make an affordable disc, single sided makes much more sense. I plan to try again in the near future.

Yes, Don, that's exactly what I was getting at. The resin material would be practically the same to maintain the necessary thickness. But a double-sided mold requires excessively more silicone to provide enough stability for the molding process. And if there was a problem on just one side, the whole mold was go to the garbage then. In other words, a less complicated procedure would, in general, allow a quicker and more reliable production, thus being more economic.

Yeah, You could have the words "NEW EDISON" scribed into it.....lol... That would make for a good repro "Telltale"....or you could just have the word "REPRODUCTION" scribed on it....or just a simple symbol of some type. Just a thought.

:o)

I have a good collection of DDs, some of which may be desirable for duplication. All of the record titles I am listing here are in E to N- condition and are titles that I think might have broad appeal. Since we are talking about single sided duplication, I will only list the title of the best side unless both sides are worthy. If Don or Norman sees anything here that they would like to duplicate, they can let me know. Also, It would be very helpful to Don and Norman if you potential buyers see anything here that you would actually buy to mention the serial numbers or titles in further replies. Marc.

Nice list, marc.

7 Blue Babies is always good.

Still rooting for a 2 sided disc even if it costs more.

Thanks.

Just a crazy thought. Could 2 thinner singles be made and then glued together to make a true 2 sided ¼ inch disc?? :monkey: :D

If you're still rooting for a double sided repro which is ten times harder to make, does that mean you're willing to pay $300 for one vs. $30 for a single sided? I'll settle for the single-sided and be happy! Marc.

The spinde holes would not line up, which is a big problem since DD's aren't truly centered to begin with.
DD's are often different diameters.
Getting each exactly ⅛" thick across it's entire surface would make building the mold equally difficult. What I do with the 78's and what I suspect Norman is trying to do with a single sided DD is more like an ice cube tray. You build a very expensive, highly accurate silicone mold and then pour an articulately processed resin into it. After the resin sets, the resulting disc is "cleaned up" and ready to play. Just this is a considerable amount of work, I can't imagine then machining it flat, centering it on another disc and adhering them together. I definitely couldn't do it at my current price point of $30.

Thanks, Don.
I have no idea how you guys do this and appreciate your explanation.
However this comes out, (and, of course, there may be new ways to improve on the way this is currently done), you both are filling a need and we thank you.
