just found out from the previous owner of this gramophone that it was found in an abandoned house and saved before the house was torn down

god knows what this gramophone has seen, or who it belonged to for the past 40-50+ years :?

i received the soundbox parts from ken priestley today, BUT the diaphragm has a HOLE in it...he must have missed it when he shipped it out, but he was very nice and asked me to return it and he'd send me another...

i decided that the spring motor is too old to run consistently, it was left fully wound up for a few years and the springs are all warped and don't have much strength in them, i am sourcing for replacements, does anyone know anywhere that supplies the correct spring for a HMV 102e? the motor is a 270-D

i found a seller 'soundgen' on eBay that sells them for 25 pounds but he replied saying that he's out of stock at the moment and hasn't gotten back to me on how soon will new stocks arrive, ken priestley sells them too but at 45 pounds which is beyond my current budget...does anyone have any source which sells them for 25-ish? (pounds)

thanks to all and merry christmas (soon)

A 102 in good condition should be able to play two 10"records with one full winding.
The average 12" record plays for a little over 4 minutes. Only post-1945 there were 12 inches that could play for over 6 minutes, because of variable groove distance (thanks to tape recording and an extra playback head that could read in advance). If Soundgen says he is out of springs (which I don't believe) you could try Ko Noteboom in the Netherlands (google him). His stock of NOS springs is impressive.
Changing a spring is quite scary though. You really need to take precautions. Even an old spring jumping out of the container can seriously wound you.
One thing I did with my old HMV 101 was flushing the container with paraffin 2 of 3 times to dissolve the hardened grease. It doesn't help for the longer term, but at least you are able to find out where the problem lies.
Did you check the condition of the fibre gears?

Peter.

hey, yeah the motor does run for about 6 full minutes but the thing is the rpm is not consistent, i opened it up to check and i can tell that it is warped and needs to be replaced soon.

i removed the spring and replaced it before and i've gotten used to doing so, so no issues with replacing one on my own, problem now is i couldn't find this 'Ko Noteboom' that you are referring to anywhere on the internet, do you have a link i could follow?

by the way, what is NOS?

thanks!

NOS = "new old stock"

Good luck,

I once had that problem with my portable VV-50 that wouldn't run steadily, until I noticed that the governor disc pad was positioned too close to the outer edge of the governor disc. The pad had developed a ridge rubbing the outer rim surface. Repositioning the pad inward off the rim solved the problem. Could that be the case with yours? Good luck.

oh yeah...this gramophone just refuses to be fixed...i wound up the motor for another go today as i was told by ken priestley that the motor needs a few cycles to settle down (makes sense to me) but today something SPECTACULAR happened...

as it was winding down i heard a jump/kick as usual, this time followed by a BANG...and the turntable slowly came to a stop...and i knew what had happened...just had to open the machine to confirm it and YES...

the spring has broke :( :( :(

might as well...since i was considering getting a new one. i took out the broken spring and it was way more dangerous this time since it effectively broke off at a sharp angle and could easily stab someone, ahhh well..i emailed mr.notenboom from the netherlands and he does have stock of a 102 spring and he should ship it to me after the new year...

i saw a picture someone posted on ebay of a 'refurbished' 102 and he claimed he put new springs in, i got the picture off the site to compare it with mine (attached below), from the pictures i can see that my old (now broken) springs are of a different shape from his, could someone tell me if this is normal? or can you tell from my picture that my springs were out of shape?

thanks to all!
