The machine was fitted with a Duncan stop when I bought it, but it was dysfunctional, and my service tech removed it when he overhauled the motor (which needed new springs--wouldn't hold steady speed). Since then I have fitted the machine with long play gearing and an Edison key (double-dolphin style), both, like the machine itself, purchases via eBay. The grille cloth was gone when I bought the machine; I replaced it with modern cloth depicting Chinese cranes as seen below. When I got it, the original finish was beyond redemption (botched Formby's job by a prior owner); I stripped what was left of the old finish from the exterior with a stripper for antiques (Minwax, if memory serves) that left a substantial part of the original stain, over which I applied and hand-rubbed five coats of gloss lacquer. As usual, the interior was OK, and I left that alone.

Now that you mention it, I don't remember if the tech gave them back to me. He said that they were totally shot, so he may not have, although he's usually pretty good about that sort of thing. Thanks for the kind words; yes, it's been a real pleasure to play for better than a dozen years now. Lucky I got it when I did, before becoming a daddy; nowadays, with all the demands of handling my daughter's schooling and activities, I'd never have time to do that refinishing job.

Turntable felt replaced (was moth eaten), but was green originally to the best of my knowledge. Has the 10/12' buttons which stop the horn/reproducer mechanism moving at the appropriate point.

I originally applied a maroon cloth to the grille but have since replaced this with an olive green silk.

I'd just like to thank you for setting up this data base project. I'm sure it will prove to be an extremely valuable resource for present & future collectors.

Another variation you may find on late C-19's is the governor was changed from having 2 weights to having 3 weights. From my personal (but limited) observations, those with 3 weights will also have mustard turntable felt instead of green.
It's also my belief that C-19's which have no speed control on the top side of the bedplate will begin to appear around the same time as the Edisonic models were introduced. These C-19's should also have a patterned grille cloth (as used on Edisonics) instead of a plain cloth.

Thank you for your contribution. It looks like you really enjoy your Chippendale! I notice that you have 2 D.D. reproducers and an adapter for 78's. With the 10"/12" capability, I get the impression that you use your C-19 as the workhorse it was meant to be. A true tribute to old Tom's philosophy of building instruments that can stand up to the test of time! My hat is off to you, sir!
