I am going to feel kinda bad about cutting this table up.... but it was the best solution to make the new top.

Even though it is a beautiful table, the value of the table is nothing compared to a restored cabinet... Be sure to keep every piece of scrap, since that highly figured quartersawn oak is extremely hard to find. You never know when you might need another piece.

TIP: rotate the pattern before you cut it out, so the grain of the table lines up with the design of the cabinet top, not the diagonal pattern of the under layment. The original veneer on the top would not have been laid diagonally...

Yes you are right Curt! I had just arbitrarily placed the top on the table for the picture

What do you think the Antique Table Society would say to that, allowing monetary valuations to override historical preservation? And wouldn't the phonograph collectors here be apoplectic if a Victrola was converted to a bar cabinet worth considerably more?

I know your comments are "tongue in cheek" and I appreciate antique furniture, but have you noticed that beautiful oak roll top desks, stunning curved glass oak curio cabinets, dining room furniture, etc. are even less appreciated than upright phonographs and the value is near nothing?
I guess everyone loves IKEA furniture...

Here is an example of the type of "antique" furniture as discussed on antique forums - 1950s-1970s junk.

Don't feel bad David, other than the wood in that table, it has no aesthetic or historic appeal.
