Making cylinders at the fair.
Last month I set up at the local Bureau County fair. I just brought two machines this year, plus my cylinder molds, wax, and shaver. There seemed to be quite a bit of interest and card taking, and I always get business from doing this. Here is some photos from the fair. I did not take photos though of the cylinder making equipment except the outer tube is in some photos, but not the rest of the parts.

That is the right venue for old time pursuits.
Marching bands would be the perfect type of tunes to play.
I bet you had a great time.
James.

Re: Making cylinders at the fair.
Two minute records that were played were all celluloid records, due to the heat and dust, I played My Irene Collins and Harlan, The Divine Eye by Thomas Negovan, It is Never late till morning,,Songs of the brave, My Old Dutch, Miss Dixie, Dixie Jass band one step by Roof Garden Jass band (Wizard). I had an example of an 1888 Edison cylinder that I made up for display only. On Blue Amberol Over the waves, Over There, Carry Me Back to Old Virginia (Kaplins Melodist), Stars and Stripes forever, lots of Uncle Josh, Whistling Rufus, Mississippi Days,, Songs of other days, The Star Spangled Banner, The Drunkards Lone Child (Dalhart), The Midnight Waltz, I'm forever Blowing Bubbles, Rainbow, St Louis Blues (new Charles Hummel one from original mold). And lots of others. I had many In the Groove articles covering the record making I was doing., and while I was there cast blanks, and made a little over a dozen while at the fair, from wax to finished blank (except for the 30 day seasoning lol.) They are shaved down to clean wax only at this stage.

You can get the St. Louis Blues from Norman Bruderhofer at http://www.berlinphonographworks.com/ or from Charlie Hummel if Norman does not have them. I think they are about 70Euro plus shipping.kirtley2012 wrote:I love that triumph!, i really must get one of those witches hat horns one day!, can you tell me where to get one of those new st louis blues cylinders and how mutch they costs

Hi Kirtley, you can get the witches hat horn from any U.S.. parts supplier like Ron Sitko, and Wyatt's Musical Americana, Antique Phonograph Supply Company, I also have an original one, and you can tell the difference as the originals the round bead around where the brass meets the tin is rounded over, and are stamped Patent Applied for or have a 1905 date. If there are any left, the St Louis Blues cylinder is available from Charles Hummel from Wayne N.J. Norman and Charley had a limited production run made from a Real 1919 Edison Blue Amberol mold, so it is really an Edison record, not re-recorded. They are $.75.00. The Triumph A is a very nice machine, it plays about 14 records when fully wound up, and when working properly has very little warble or flutter. It was $50.00 when new about 1901-1905. Edison used the Spring Motor and the Triumph A in the studio to make master cylinder recprds. They were set up with a large, lead flywheel, and a floating recorder that had an advance ball system. .

I could be wrong about the price. Best to check directly yourself. However, yes, they are expensive. If you just want a copy of that music, an original could be had cheaper but until recently, this was the first "blue amberol" made since 1929.kirtley2012 wrote:Thanks! I've got that particular recording on Diamond Disc, original cylinder and the new BA. Crazy, I know.

I agree it was very expensive, however it was more of the fact it came from an original mold that was why I got it. normally I would never pay that kind of money for a cylinder. I though did pay 50-60.00 for some original brown wax Edison cylinders from the late 1890s..

How much would a beat up original horn cost?
