Edison DD Record

This is no doubt a rather dumb question but here goes. This DD record was in the stack of 38 that came with a C250 I recently received. The blank side does not appear to ever had a label, the flip side has a label. Any info on this?

Im pretty sure that some of the labels can fall off like that, leaving the brown paper

Yes the label simply has come off the record. You see quite a few of those. Some of it has to do with the paper becoming loose and then if the records are put in the edison slots to hold them up it can peel the paper if its tight fitting and the paper loose.

The glue that holds the white labels on has become very delicate over the years. Not only can labels lift on the edges and be sheared in two when withdrawn from machines with leatherette-covered storage slots like the C-19, but the damned things will also fall off on their own volition. I believe there used to be a website that had a file for a down-load able white label and you could type the label info in using the proper font. Anyone recall that website?

The underlying brown paper is because the extended "cooking" time of the Edison discs also turned paper BROWN, which is why they used embossed labels until 1921. When it was realized that a clean label could be glued atop the 'cooked' label (and after a million complaints from dealers!) , Edison Discs fianlly got real labels. They also fall off, with great regularity.
