i have just bought a 1899 columbia caseless Q graphophone but i have some questions about it:
what horn (s) did this come with originally?, was it only the black 10" conical horn or did it come with others?
also, with the serial #318734 what part of 1899 would it come from?
thanks!

Kirtley,

The Columbia Phonograph Companion, Vol. 1, indicates that the first style Q came with 10" japanned tin horn, the type I think you are talking about. There is no indication of any other style horns coming with this model except for a type QQ top of the line subtype that came with a 10" nickel planted horn, a recorder, and a bent-wood carrying case at $10, twice the price of the base model.

What is curious is the serial number, as it indicates that the serial number range for these started with 321866.

Alex,
The next time you go on ebay, look for the plain, flat key for the Q. A picture is shown on the recent thread about the Columbia model B. The reproducer is a later one, perhaps an upgrade to the earlier, smaller reproducer. Good luck with your search.

Ok, so this has the wrong key and reproducer, I will probably keep the reproducer on this one since I imagine it's better, then get a older one as a extra some time in the future, I wonder how it wound up with the later key and reproducer
