Mrs. Van Puyster's Idea - Part 1

In 1907 Victor sent out a very lavishly produced direct mail piece that included a 12 page booklet, bound by a red piece of yarn, a letter from Victor's sales office announcing the piece is available for their customers, placed in an envelope sealed by wax with the Victor logo stamped on it.

I have been an advertising executive for major ad agencies, producing print materials and managed many direct mail campaigns. This piece is a great example of the expense and shows the high end audience that Victor targeted.

Not many of these pieces survived and I obtained this piece from an auction around 1989.

If I had to pick one piece of phonograph advertising as my all time favourite this is it, and you folks know what a nut I am for adverising materials. The text of " Mrs Van Puyster" appeared in the "high class " magazines such as Harpers which is where I first saw it, but I have always wanted to see the full presentaton! It's marvellous. A fellow collector friend of mine when he plays a ragtime number says " Mrs, Van Puyster would NOT approve of this one"
Many thanks for posting this!
Jim.
