It would take an extreme close-up to see how worn that sapphire is; but I have heard it's possible to turn it, as one would turn a worn reproducing stylus, to present a clean edge for use...

In the case of the recorder without stylus, I know Eric Reiss, in his Compleat Talking Machine, gives instructions on making a workable stylus of glass rod, with an aluminum holder...

This looks like the recording stylus from an Ediphone machine which would more record 4 minute, doe it actually track on a blank? Or does it top out on you? If you are careful, you can push the stylus out, and turn it, and put it back in the bar and it should cut like new, if you turn it 180 degrees..
