Hi folks

I am still a layman when it comes to these Edison machines and I have many questions.

This here horn came with my 'new' Edison Phongraph.

It has a brass trumpet but the rest is actually sheet metal. It is definetly quite old but the previous owner is not sure where it came from.

As it is, this will not fit and stay on the Model C reproducer.

Does the hron need some sort of rubber or adapter or somethibng to hold it on there?

Should I preserve / restore this horn or just get a new one?

Hi, the horn is missing the cylindrical (tube shaped) end that fits over the outlet of the reproducer. It looks rather rusty as well as though someone left it out in the weather for a while.

Hi Bernt, I have no reproduction cylinder phonograph horns that (most of which anyway) have this cylindrical "tube" end that appears to be broken off or otherwise missing on yours. I did, however, include some pictures below of one of my original cylinder phonograph horns showing the (on originals like this, crimped and part of the "cone") end that you are missing. It seems like the seller should have known that the crank and horn were not functional. Assuming you got the Standard at a good price (ie. very reasonable) then you did fine! Have you tried the reproducer to see if it produces sound? - Doug

Here are a couple pic's to help you out.. The horn end slips over the reproducer nipple. You do not need a rubber connector to couple the two together..

You should be able to find a short copper pipe fitting at your local hardware store that will fit the reproducer exactly, and slip into the horn to replace the missing piece. Solder it in, sand down the rusty finish and get a smooth surface, repaint, and you're up and running. Not perfect but still better than a repro horn.

Thanks for the pics. That is very helpful. I will now be able to repair this horn - no problem.

I think 'they' tried to make it softer since there is another pipe running all the way through the horn, ending in a big washer inside near the trumpet. Sort of a muffler and it looks homemade.

Is that cylindrical piece a snug fit onto the reproducer without any gasket?
Also, how long should it be?

Fortunately standard copper plumbing fittings fit perfectly.
Do all soldering then sand and paint.Good as new.

I have now removed the extra pipe inside the horn and the washer.

I had a closer look at the reproduver end and I can say 95% for sure that whatever was there before, was soldered in.

I can see an old ring of remaining solder from long ago.

Only realy problem would be if the horn is rusted through somehwere.
I saw some bad blisters...

Progress report:

I have now derusted the horn and took most of the dents out.
I have also made (from acofee tin) and added the missing piece.

It is ready for painting.

Does it need black high gloss or matt finish?
