This is coming up at auction and was wondering what were some thoughts on the horn. Besides being somewhat beatup it looks to be of some sort paper. Looks older style,the opening lead in is flat looking not radiused inward.Is it worth going out of my way for or not?

Definitely not original...Probably pulled from a 1920's radio type setup... I see these paper horns from tine to time.. If the horn is decent, Keep it for something, If not, Chuck it...

I think an original or repro horn is in order for this nice Edison standard.

If it's up for auction please note the missing gear cover, the poor refinish to the case, and there's a problem with the lid. The molding looks incorrect and the veneer is running the wrong direction. Maybe the entire lid is someone's attempt at a replacement. Jerry

Yeah, Jerry is right.. Someone has messed with the lid...I'd check that out if I were you... The finish on the machine is suspect also and the entire machine could use a good cleanup.. I would pay no more than $250-$300 for that machine if you are really dying for it.. Just to give you a ballpark.. The standard lids are on ebay all the time relatively cheap under $50-$100 if you need to replace the lid..

PS: Gear covers for the Standard B usually go for around $30 on Ebay..and it looks like the one on this machine is missing as Jerry mentioned..No biggie..

I must disagree. The horn, from the single photo, appears to be an original, and the only interesting thing about the machine in question. Similar to several shown in Antique Phonograph Gadgets, Gizmos, and Gimmicks and in Antique Phonograph Accessories & Contraptions. The gilt decoration looks similar to that used on the Mega Phono Horns. The smaller fiber horns don't show up as often as the larger ones, so examine it carefully before "chucking it."

The other comments concerning the machine should be seriously considered. A poor restoration is much more difficult to fix than an unrestored machine.

The horn is obviously not an Orignal Edison horn from the Edison factory, though it may have be around or available the same vintage as the machine... It could have been a dealer add-on...but seriously doubt it. It was most likely thrown onto that machine at a later date..

I'm pretty sure the horn is a "Linenoid" horn. They made them for disc machines too. I've got a very large black Linenoid designed to fit a Victor V or VI. They are super light and are pretty attractive imho.

I wouldn't go out of my way for this particular phonograph though. Looks like it's seen better days.

Thanx guys for your thoughts and concerns. Hopefuly I can sneak out tomorrow and give a shot at it.It would have to go cheap to be able to roll it fast,esp if the horn is not something. Yeah that lid looks way off with the grain and it also looks lumpy like someone tried to bend some 1/4in verneer plywood over it. Will post if I bring it back home,hopefuly with a car load of other stuff too!

I think you're right - - it looks more like a Linenoid than a Mega Phono Horn. I have a Linenoid like yours, but for a cylinder machine (32" long x 22" bell). The ads I've seen for these in the 1905-1908 period called this size the "Concerto." I like your horn for Victor very much!
