How do you store your edison diamond discs?

Hi--I am building up quite a collection (>100) of Edison Diamond discs--I love them. But...how do you store them so that you have easy access to them and know where is what??? Thank you.

I store them like any other records, at least the ones that I have managed to organize on shelving. For instance, a Billy Murray DD roughly shares space with my other Murray discs that I have on other labels.

And of course, because they're so thick, they easily stand out from the other records, if it's a DD that I'm specifically looking for, it's no trouble to find it.

The rest are grouped by genre like other records, and it's still a PITA sometimes to find a specific one, but again, if I know it's on DD, it at least narrows the search. Thanks, Tommy E.

Well, I've got the storage full in my Baby Console, and I made a couple of indexes for that.... Next, I'll work something out for the C-250 (I may need to make tags for that).

After that, it's anybody's guess.....

What is the caoacity of your DD cabinet? Is it an antique? Can you show me a picture of it?

It is an issue I am trying to work out in my head. So far I just have them on shelves grouped by label type (and accordingly roughly by age). I use the type designation taken from the little booklet "An Illustrated Guide to Edison Disc Record Labels" by Stephen A. Sylvester--self-published in 1985. Further planned refinements when I have the time are:

• Arrange them by either record on matrix number within type groupings.

• List them all in an Excel spreadsheet, which, while certainty not period, is very practical. It makes it easy to add newly acquired records in sequence. It enables sorting by any criteria you want—record number, matrix number, artist, title, etc., and printing out the results. This could also be done using a table in Word.

I've got 500+ recorded in an excel spreadsheet and organized by coupling number, biggest to smallest. Some exceptions are made for "favorites" of course.

I cut and past the correct line item in the below spreadsheet so get recording dates etcetera. I haven't worried about correct take no. etcetera so far. HUGE amount of work but you can sort the spreadsheet any way you want to, by title, coupling no. or artist once you've got it set up.

MordEth's spreadsheet is great. Thanks for the reminder about it. I may just add a yes/no column for whether I have a copy in my collection, then sort on that, and voilà!

Where do you keep them all and how do you know where each one is?

I start with the 50xxx numbered sequentially in a cabinet in an upstairs bedroom, then from 506xx to 52xxx in bookcases in my office downstairs, finally ending at 83xxx in a Chippendale C19 again upstairs. It works pretty well. You can store them in the machines, like chippendale in original or new paper jackets with plastic covers slid over them.

I store my cylinders and disks in numbered boxes. The boxes are stored in sturdy cabinets or shelves. I created a custom computer database that holds all the pertinent information, including the box number. Indexed slots in Edison cabinets are also entered into the database. I can run all sorts of flexible ad-hoc queries, such as to find which records are in a box or phonograph, or which boxes contain records by a certain performer. It is possible to include a printout for each box or phonograph. It does not take long to sort through a single small box to find the record I'm looking for.
