Someone asked about the gadget that Don Gfell had on display at the Orlando show.

I am posting this for Don Gfell who is producing a duplex type attachment for cylinder phonographs. It gives you the ability to attach two horns to your phonograph. You can contact him at [email protected] or at his shop 419-499-3093 . the cost is 95.00 plus shipping. he will also have a few on hand at the North Carolina, Wayne, and Union show.

Interesting indeed. Does having the weight of 2 horns on the reproducer cause any issues?

I have seen replica Columbia aluminum horns that quite lightweight, but they are expensive.

I could be wrong but wouldn't a 1/2in plumbing y connector do the same job? but I would worry about the weight on thr reproducer.Gordon

Weight wouldn't be an issue with horns suspended from cranes, which would be the ideal solution.

The Edison Duplex reproducer is obviously different from this interesting new gizmo in that the upper tube draws vibrations from the top of the diaphragm, and the side tube draws vibrations from the underside of the diaphragm. It is perhaps significant that as Edison designed it, the device can't carry two short horns. The side tube is not rigid -- it rotates to any position -- and can't support the weight of a horn without simply falling forward. Also, the tube is larger in diameter than the normal reproducer tube on the front so a self-supported horn won't fit on it. I'm sure this was deliberate -- it forced people to use it with two crane-supported horns with rubber tubing to link to the reproducer, as shown in their advertising. Weight was therefore not a problem.

I have to agree. I'm not sure what the point would be. It's not a reproduction of any original device, except in possibly the broadest sense.

I don't get why this is being made either. Its cool and all, and I know Don does AMAZING work, as well as creating some fantasy style horns. The problem is 50 years from now. This thing, along with all the other repro stuff out there should really be identified as such on the actual item. Reproduction wood horns are flowing on ebay all the time from a few makers, and no one, I think, stamps them. All it needs is 20 years in a barn and its suddenly 'original' enough.
