I recently purchased this Edison Standard Cylinder machine and am confused about the "Type 2 Standard" designation. Can anyone shed some light on what makes this machine a Type 2?

Notice the plate says Edison-Bell. I believe that Standard was originally exported to England, where it was marketed by Edison-Bell.

I agree. It looks like a regular Edison Standard that was Destined or sold in the UK or Europe. Somehow, it found its way back to the U.S., Either that, or someone got creative with an Edison-Bell Badge floating around at a phonograph show.. Either way, It's still cool!

Could it be that Edison-Bell called it Type 2, because it is the later banner-style Standard Model A case, not the early suitcase model? Just guessing...

Now on 2nd glance, The front decal looks like a repro.. It probably had an Edison Bell Decal on the front at one time...which is long since gone.. but I think can still be obtained by Gregg Cline.

I think you have a domestic banner Standard that someone put a Bell plate on the lid. That plate should be on the bed-plate, not the lid. See pic attached.

I think it's a legit import to the UK. I had an Edison Gem imported to the UK which had the same kind of tag on the lid. This was labeled "Type 1" Link to additional pics of my GEM is below.

Thanks for the clarification. (always learning things on this forum). Makes you wonder if the original machine had a Bell transfer or a Edison Banner on it.

Ever try to hammer a tack on an Edison veneer lid? Pretty scary!

The Gem had and Edison Bell Decal on the lid above the banner decal. Somehow it either got rubbed off or fell off but you can see the remnants in this pic.

Looking at it again I agree that it looks very light for a period correct "green oak" cabinet, at least compared to mine. Could just be the photograph though. Maybe you're right that it was stripped and refinished with a regular banner decal.
