what do i need to look for on the tag while looking for an edison B home any help

Can't tell you much about what to look for on the serial plate... that said, I have two Home-B's one c. 1905, the other .1907.


General characteristics of the Home - B are as follows:

1) Speed control - concealed below bed-plate

2) End-gate - has lever-type gate latch

3) Carriage lift - lever type

4) Cabinet - end-type cover latches; early versions have "scroll" or "banner" decal, later versions have the simple "Edison" signature.


The Home-C had the following major changes:

1) End-gate - eliminated; mandrel now supported be centerbearing between feed-screw and mandrel

2) Carriage lift - lever replaced by plunger with knurled-knob


And for what it's worth, some characteristics of the Home-A:

1) Speed control - nickeled knob above bed-plate, left of brake lever.

2) End-gate - has spring-catch with round ball-knob.

3) Carriage lift - lever type

4) Carriage - may have two tabs to secure reproducer ( later versions have knurled set-screw in side of carriage-ring.

5) Cabinet / lid - early versions have "scroll" or "banner" decal up on lid, domed lid may be secured with four "suit-case latches". Later versions have the lever-type latches on ends of machine.

6) Crank - early machines have a slotted-end, later have female-threaded.

Perhaps someone will be able to help with serial number info ?

Edison Home B's are pretty distinctive. They only have a "Half" bedplate as compared to the earlier Home "A" which had a "Full" long bedplate with Nickeled Speed control knob on the front left. The Home "B" Has no such knob. The speed control was re-located underneath the bedplate in the same location, but under the bedplate.

Home B's also still had the endgate as mentioned by previous poster. Home "C"'s the endgate was eliminated.

Pretty sure the Home B's production ran from Early 1905 to Early 1907? - Not a 100% on the 1907 cut-off date, Maybe someone can respond, I don't have my Frow book with me, I'm at work.

*Also, They made alot of them! They are still plentiful, and a great reliable machine! I have two of them! - Both 1905 Models, Both (Banner Decals), believe according to Frow that the "Edison" decals on the front came in 1906.
