I found this today among a few other records that I bought for $1 overall. It's pretty beat up, but it was too good of a song to not share! From Banner 6379.

Not a bad tune!

That recording distortion sounds very early electric to me. Not something from 1929.

Did you see that was on the BANNER label? It was not Victor or Columbia,
thus did not have benefit of the licensed Western Electric technology.
Many department store record labels sound primitive, partially because
they used carbon microphones, rather than the excellent Western Electric
Condenser Microphone.

Yes, I can see it's on Banner.

In 1929 they could have still had their own 'proprietary' system or moved on to Western Electric or something else. I have a bunch of Banners, but I haven't researched the dates / timeline on all of them. My memory tells me none of them sound all that good.

And when you talk about distortion in early electrics, the factors are much more complicated than just the type of microphone that was used.

The recording date given was from that wonderful(and often incorrect) 78 discography site. It very well could have been recorded at another time. If anybody has any further information regarding Banner's recording dates (I have not found a good source) please let me know. :)
