Victor Special Record

Post by phonojim »

I found this in antique shop last weekend and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it such as the date, what it was used for, etc. The only number on it is 41289 in the runout area. It appears to me that 41XXX might have been reserved for Victor's specials. Any help?

Graham-Paige was an automobile make that lasted until about 1940. So, it probably was produced as a sales tool. Perhaps others know more. It is an unusual disc and would be interesting to hear. Since the Victor Talking Machine Company label is on it, I would guess it was produced between about 1925 and 1929.

I'd love to hear this one. Arthur Pryor was the famous trombone soloist, first with Sousa then as leader of his own concert band. He also composed trombone solos, many of them fiendishly difficult, which he played (and recorded) to show off his impressive technique, a lot of which is very convincing fakery, but "who's counting?", as they say. Pryor recorded extensively for the Victor Company, and these solos have been re-released on 33 and CD (Crystal Records).

BTW, Arthur's son Roger was a movie actor in the 1930s-40s.

I've got something similar, a record made for a yeast company. There's music and singing, and a man talks about yeast. I think it might have been something for the radio.

Made to order for the Graham Brothers toasts out to their service organization after they purchased the Paige-Detroit Otor Company in '28.

I owned and drove a pre-Graham-Paige 1927 Paige 8-85 (a left-over unit titled as a '28) when I was in college. Nice car, comfortable, roomy, stylish for the time, easy to drive, and realtively powerful, but simply awful gas mileage.

The Graham-Paige special record is rather nice. Thirty-Five years ago I'd have paid a great deal for a copy.

Scott at Vintage Music up in Minneapolis picked up a considerable number of unplayed copies of the. Yeast Foamer's record (a late 1930 or early 1931 RCA Victor issue) about fifteen years ago. I got a couple copies from him, and really enjoy them. Fun musical number, very well recorded, and the advertising is a hoot!

Phonojim, is it possible for you to post a transfer here of the Graham-Paige March? I would really like to hear this one! Thanks.

I would be happy to. I do intend to copy it digitally anyway, so it depends on what I would need to do to upload it. Is it possible to upload an audio file directly to this site or would I need to use a hosting site to do it?

If you're asking me, I have to plead total ignorance. I'm sure that other members who've posted audio here can help.

For me the simplest route is to upload to Youtube and then attach a video here.
