Can a powerful magnet be used to clean records. My idea is to attract the particles left behind by the steel needles.

Possible, but I'd think you would need to wet the records anyhow to loosen the material- to remove fine steel particles by magnetism alone you might need an MRI machine.

With most records it's just plain dirt in the grooves that causes trouble.

Interesting idea, but I think you'd need a very powerful magnet, to pull up the stuff that's ground / embedded in the groove.
