Problem just began on Monday; before that everything was hunky-dory. Is this a board problem of the past day or two? I haven't changed any settings on my machine, etc.

PMs stay in the outbox until the recipient has read them. Once the message is read, it will disappear from your outbox.

Unless I'm mistaken, new message alerts won't been seen by intended recipients unless they're logged in.

They should also get an email alert, unless they disabled that setting in the User Control Panel.
