Really wonderful- thanks for posting!

Caruso has been the singer for me since many years ago when I would sit in the darkened sitting room at my grandparents' and listen to their large collection of one- and two-sided 78's - all in my own collection now.

Thre are other singers who "hook" me for sure - Warren, Callas, Pinza, Plancon, Tauber, Bjoerling to name a few. But Caruso is always the one who reminds me why I love music and opera.

Many thanks - I'd never have seen the article if you had not posted it.

Gee, why am I buying a subscription to ON if I could get it for free on the 'net? I've been a subscriber for years, back to the time when I was teaching a course in the history of opera, and occasionally making the trip into the City for performances at the Met. IMO the most interesting articles in ON are the historical ones like this Caruso.

If I had known about the weblink I would have posted it here. After all, Opera News is not likely to show up on the magazine rack at your local newstand!

Maybe they let that one out because interest in historical singers is just a bit of a teaser anyway.

I used to subscribe to Opera News, now I just pick it up at the public library from time to time. It's still a good publication.

For the article above, there were some good photos I hadn't seen before. Someone as famous as Caruso, one who's interested expects that they have seen most of the interesting ones by now, and yet, more turn up. The big one at the top with his cigarette holder, I had never seen.

Though I know he was a heavy smoker! His son Enrico Jr. wrote about that in his book, also describing the daily ritual that Caruso would go through to clear his airways of smoking gunk that had accumulated.

"To Beaumonde, from Errico."

Looks good! And worth some bucks, too, I'd imagine.
