If you search you should find several threads here on the Forum dealing with record storage and various custom and off the shelf shelving solutions. Also acquiring one or more antique record storage cabinets is nice if you can find them and have room for them. Your records should be stored vertically and should always be in good paper sleeves or albums.
Here is a picture of my own solution. I already had several fairly inexpensive shelving units from an office supply store (Office Depot for US viewers) on hand. I had a local carpenter make, stain, and install dividers for the shelves. (Something not hard to do yourself if, unlike me, you have access to a home wood-working shop.) They are simply installed with screws. The dividers break up the shelf space so that there is not too much pressure on the records and adding new ones in the appropriate place is simple. They also add reinforcement to support the considerable weight of the records.
If you want to use a closet, you could build some similar shelves to fit the space.
