Who are the McAlpineers? Check out this rare video where Edison discusses his opinion of jazz.

The McAlpineers is one of many pseudonyms for The California Ramblers - the name probably refers to the Hotel McAlpin in NYC.

Edison didn't like Jazz (not many men of his generation did) , but by this time his son Theodore was in charge of record production and a lot of excellent dance music went out on Edison discs.

It seems though that when Edison Did record jazz it sounded better than the lateral crap.

Now THAT was an interesting video! Very creative indeed. It sure made me :P and more importantly  . I have searched for a nice copy of that Edison Diamond Disc ("Red Hot") for years. No luck so far. If anyone has one in decent playing condition and would consider a trade or selling let me know.

What's all this fuss about lack of jazz on Edison? I'd bet that by the early 20's Edison offered jazz as about the same percentage of it's repertoir as did the other major labels. There are plenty of dogs, heart songs etcetera on the other major labels too. Still with Edison sales as just a fraction of cumulative lateral cut issues it can seem like not much out there, I agree. :monkey:

This is my sentiment too on this subject, the Edison jazz I have heard and have is really good stuff, well recorded even the acoustic versions.

Yes I know. I am the original poster, and I am an avid Edison DD jazz collector. I wrote that subject statement as a joke to set up the funny video. The music on the video is proof enough that there is jazz on DD. Even on the etched labels if you look hard enough for bands like Wilbur Sweatman.
