It happens. You buy a coin-op phonograph missing its sign board. Here is an overly-simplified tutorial on how to replace your missing board with a reproduction. This isn't a Masters Course, but will give you an idea of all the steps involved.

Image
As you see, this is our new sign board. Unfinished oak. First steps are to measure and drill the holes for the pegs that hold it to the cabinet, and glue them in to the sign board. Next I mixed wood dye to match the color. In this instance, because the original cabinet was so nice, I diluted some Mohawk light golden oak with alcohol, and then after it dried, tinted it with some Mohawk amber tint to give it that light orange that Graphophone cabinets always have.

A few light coats of satin sheet lacquer, and we are ready to work on the reproduction sign itself.

We start with a laser copy of the replacement sign.

Using a piece of glass cut to fit the sign, I trace the correct dimensions with a pencil, and cut the sign out.

Place flat in a baking sheet, preheat oven to 225*F, and wet with strong coffee. Bake ten minutes, and make sure paper is dry before removing from baking sheet.

Looks great! And now, see it in "action" on the Graphophone:

Hi Wyatt,
You did a fantastic job! That Bill board really looks aged. Where did you get the Graphophone graphics from??
