Which model HMV was this?

Did this used to be a wind-up gramophone, that's been butchered in a surprisingly intricate way, or is it the remnants of an early HMV ragiogram or speaker?

The fretwork doesn't look like the early large HMV speakers I've seen, and the whole outside has been stripped, but just maybe it's something very interesting.
Strange they seem to have packed the inside with polystyrene. That wasn't around at the date a conversion such as this would have made sense! I wonder what the story is...?
If you want a nice early-ish HMV radiogram, see here...
