How to harden cactus needles?

I saw a recipe like this: put a cactus needle on shellac for a week, and then puts it in the oven for 15 minutes. But I wonder if someone does it differently, or put another type of solution. Here in Brazil the needles are expensive. I need to find new ways. Thank you.
