Is this really "Coast Guards March"? That's what the cylinder is numbered, titled as but could it be mislabeled? The other versions on youTube sound totally different? :monkey:

It sounds the same as the recording on the UCSB Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project site so I think it's correct:

I've heard a couple versions of Washington Post March recorded by different bands that sound different. I'm wondering if marching bands don't necessarily always play a piece exactly true to the original composition.

This is not the official Coast Guard song. The Coast Guard's official march title is "Semper Paratus" (Latin for "always ready") which is the service's motto.
The original words were written in 1922, with current-use lyrics penned in 1943.

Yes the tune is totally different and I'm unable to find the Indestructible version elsewhere on youTube. If anyone else has this cylinder kindly give it a listen and see if it's the same tune I've uploaded here.

The 2 Minute Albany Archive on Youtube has it, and it's the same tune.

I did note from the picture of the rim that the actual title is just "Coast Guards" - there's a period between that and "March". Perhaps one of the sheet music archives or the Indestructible reference book would have more info?

Got to love those Indestructibles.. I love'em! I have about two hundred of them. I'll take them -even with some of the shrinkage..

If it wasn't for them, Some of the two-minute music of the day would not be around today.

Great job with the audio portion. What did you use to record it?

Thanks Jim. I just used a relatively inexpensive, about $200, external mic. that plugs into the camera. The result is pretty good though, I think.

Yes, the quality can be great, especially the two minute ones. Shrinkage is definitely an issue though and the selection of music could be better. So many of the recordings are by artists like, "band", probably house bands and nothing seems to be known about them.
