There is a Cheney phonograph near where I live and I don't know anything about them. I just wanted to know if this is a fair price and if it would be worth checking out.

I've had only one Cheney machine in my years of collecting...I found it to be a very well made , high quality machine...If there was one near me for that price , I would jump on it , in a heart beat....they are DELUX..

I've owned two Cheneys over the years. One was a "Georgian" model that was just gigantic and It has since gone to a new home. I kept the oak style E that I bought from another forum member several years ago. Came with everything including the original sales and packing papers. They're very nice machines. The one in the CL ad seems to have been stripped on the outsode of the cabinet, though, which would steer me away from it. Cheneys aren't very scarce, especially in the midwest where they seem to have sold very well compared to out here in the East. I'd wait for a nice original.

If it was half that price I'd say go for it - the stripped case hurts it. I have a Cheney - they are solid, have excellent motors and when rebuilt they play very well.
