A great looking HMV Model 460 Lumiere went for a bargain at a 10th of the price.

Those seem like good deals - especially the 460 (though I'd rather have the Xa!).

The original picture did not help the 460, but may explain why the diaphragm survived.

The additonal pictures are far more useful. What era is the particular type of soundbox on the Xa from?

Who cares about the flipping EMG? What about a Lumiere for £260 with what appears to be the best condition diaphragm ever? That's simply madness. Did the dealers all fall asleep? Was the auctioneer singing sweet lullabies in their ears?

The Xa and soundbox are from around 1930.

Well for a normal size living room, the EMG is probably the best sounding gramophone ever produced and the Lumiere is probably the worst. I wonder if that "cover" over the diaphragm is original?

Where is the cursed "ring" when you don't need them?

The cover over the diaphragm was actually a Polyphon disc or another disc from a mechanical music-box of some sort. The Lumiere is certainly not the worst gramophone for your living room. In fact I could name plenty of machines that are nowhere near as good as a Lumiere, including most internal horn machines made before it was launched including other HMV models.

The finish on the horn is the only reason I didn't bid. It doesn't look original.

White EMG horns are not unusual. This one, to me looks original.

My Lumiere only gets played to show off it's unique design. Never for my listening pleasure. This one does look exceptional.

Thanks for pointing that out, I thought I'd heard that there were EMGs with white horns, but I didn't want to say that without hearing from someone with a little more experience with them than I have! This one looked right to me as well.
