Good Afternoon!

Do any of you know of a source for felt that would be appropriate under the lid of my Expert Senior? It came with a very grungy looking green felt, but I would be inclined to believe that the original was brown? Do I cover the inside lid molding with felt, or just the panels? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

As a general rule Expert didn't line the lids with felt. I've never seen an Expert machine with original felt lined lid anyway. Are you thinking of the later EMG machines which were sometimes lined with baize? The finish on the Expert should be the same identical finish to the rest of the cabinet. It's possible the felt was added later and was not original to it. Either way, no one can say for definite what colour or type of felt should be used so it's a case of "anything goes". I would use any brown wool felt if you're determined to put felt in there. Personally speaking, I would just polish it up the same as you have done elsewhere. That is how they were originally intended to be.

My Expert Senior is a very late one indeed, probably post war. It has brown felt inside the lid on all sides, and I can believe that it has always been that way. The ivorine plaque inside the lid just states "MADE BY Expert Gramophones Ltd"

Hello Garret. may appologies for not getting back to you, on the forum, earlier. I will take a couple of pictures of the brown felt lined lid of my Expert Senior, hopefully soon. My machine is fitted with a horn stay-It looks quite genuine, but cannot be sure, but I suppose if it is a late model as I think it is, Mr Ginn might just have added the strengthener for the customer. I have never seen one before in all the years of having these machines.

My Expert Junior has a felt lined lid too.

Hello Garret, I did take some photographs of the felt lining inside my Expert gramophone, by flashlight. Unfortunately the pictures do not give a good enough idea of the true colour, etc. Sorry! I will try to take some more for you by daylight in the next few days. I see our good friend Orchorsol has put a picture on of the colour of his felt. I have just looked, and the colour of the felt in my machine is much darker-a good deep brown.

Mine is darker than it appears in the photo - a little thoughtless of me perhaps - I hope that hasn't misled you Garret.

Will do my best to photograph it in good daylight when I can, but that commodity is now in very short supply here in the UK! Hopefully sometime over the weekend.
