I have recently bought a Standard A fitted with a Model B reproducer. I have noticed that at some stage the carrier has been modified with the addition of a metal plate and a roller type pin at the front. Can anyone suggest why this has been modified. Was it a combination for another Edison? I can only think that the original carrier was broken and someone has fixed it with this modification. The diamond stylus is exactly at the top of the cylinder when playing. Is this also correct.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am not a cylinder machine expert, but it does seem as though your carriage has been repaired, and this has thrown off the position it should have. It is now positioned farther toward the front of the machine, and the pin was installed to correct that so it will ride on the edge. Also, I can say that on my Standard with the horizontal carriage, the stylus rides just to the rear of center. The new position of the carriage accounts for this. Make any sense?

I don't have a Diamond B setup on my Standards, so take this with a grain of salt:
Could it be that this carrier arm may have been meant for a Fireside and was altered to fit the Standard? I've run into situations where early day collectors have attempted to use Fireside parts on Standards (with varying degrees of success). What ever it was, they sure put a bunch of work into it...

it's a bad repair; the offset is so they could screw it. they also replaced the lift mechanism because it was too short for the modification and added the brass peg.
