What type of wood?

I have a Grafonola and Im guessing Walnut..or? Anyone have an idea?

Appears to be walnut- but I think the flash is making the inside of the lid appear redder than it is.

With Grafonolas in general up to the mid 20's, red = mahogany, brown = walnut

As crazy as it may sound it may be a Pine or Spruce which is stained. Spruce has good acoustic qualities
If it is stained a nutty red brown then more than likely the feature wood or surface is Mahogany...possibly Walnut as estott has suggested and I concur

It's a cheaper variety of wood, usually referred to as "gum", with a mahogany colored finish applied.

And has a mahogany veneer on the outside top.

You're most probably right - Golumbia machines were decently built but the cheaper Grafonolas cut a few corners.
