What was the purpose of this little Columbia box?

Any ideas? I should have measured the box. The decal is the standard Columbia size to give you some scale. Jerry and Harvey

Could it be just a box that someone stuck a Columbia decal on? It's quite off-center, making it look a bit amateur.

I had seen a similar box like this at Union some years back. The seller told me that it was from the factory, and that it held decals that were installed when the cabinets were being finished. The box I speak of had a Victrola decal on it, and to me it looked correct. The sizing was right, it was dovetailed, and it showed all the right kind of age that I would need to conclude that it was authentically OLD. In every respect. But conflicting opinions amongst other collectors kept me from buying it.

I bought this little box on ebay a few years ago.I had a gut feeling this was old. There were only 2 bids and I got it cheap. When I got it, the decal was not "just put" on the box. It is very old as is the box. There is no film like you would see with a new decal. The finish, decal, and hardware all look old. I didn't see any signs of a partition in it either.Anyway, it was unusual and interesting. Anymore input would be greatly appreciated.
