I Found an Edison Talking Doll

Hi everyone, I'm new here, I registered because I need some help restoring this Edison doll I recently rescued from being thrown out. She is missing her phonograph and cylinder (obviously, I think only 3 are known to have their originals) and I'd like to get a replacement reproduction mechanism. Where would I be able to find one? And how much do they cost?

Also, does anyone have any information or cool facts or anything about Edison talking dolls? I did some research myself, but you guys seem like the experts.

THANK YOU!!! And Happy belated Halloween!!

Congratulations on a rare find! There are more than 3 surviving with original phonograph intact. I don't have a full count but I'd guess closer to a dozen.

I have quite a bit of information about it on my site. I also wrote a long article about the doll a few years back, I can dig it out and scan it for you if you'd like.

There have been several production runs of replica mechanisms over the years by various machinists. Quality has ranged from barely adequate to absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, as far as I know all such production series have been pre-sold in advance of manufacture. Every once in a great while one of those many replicas may pop up on eBay, but not often -- and they sell for a high price. So unless someone decides to do another series it could be a challenge to find one.

There are far more dolls without phonographs than with, simply because after the protracted legal battle between Edison and the Edison Phonograph Toy Mfg. Co. finally ended, all of the remaining unsold dolls had their phonographs removed and the dolls were sold off as ordinary toys. The scarcity of complete originals derives from the fact that they were only on the market for a few weeks.

I love your website! And if you have your article and it's not too much trouble, I'd love to see it!

Dang it. How much have you seen them go for on eBay? Do you have the Edison doll? What kind of mechanism do you have?

Exactly how rare are these dolls, anyway? I love the doll I found, and because I found her I think it's my duty to restore her to her original historic condition.
