What is the "Baby" needed for? Which machines was it intended for?

The Music Master "Baby" was an "after market" small wood horn. Small adaptors at the small end would allow the horn to be used on a variety of different makes of machines. Jerry

Okay thanks, Jerry. Did they ever come pre-drilled for horn crane fittings as far as you know? Or were they likely used more for disc phonographs? Has anyone got a picture of such a horn on a machine?

The intended use was for the "smaller" version rear mount outside horn machines such as the Victor I, II, III, and so on. I am not aware that there was ever one that was factory intended for horn crane compatibility. However, that is not to say that you may not find some contraption that someone along the way has assembled to meet their needs!!

My understanding is that one of these won't fit as they come with a metal sleeve for attachment to non-Victor elbows ie Columbia type and others. Wouldn't it have infringed on Victor patents to produce a horn that snugly fits into a Victor elbow "after market"? Without an adaptor I'm not sure it would work? Why not simply get an original and correct small wooden Victor horn instead?

I can not verify specific patent compliance/non-compliance issues, however, I can assure you that I have seen the Music Master horns with accurate collars for Victor elbows that came on the horns from the source where the horns/machines were purchased new. As well, I have seen the Music Master horns on rear mount Columbia and Zonophone machines...correct and sold this way originally. A prime example of a very rare Music Master w/ inlaid Mother of Pearl on a Victor VI is seen in a collection in Canada.

Specifically regarding your inquiry about "getting an original and correct small wooden Victor horn instead"...I have outlined what is correct in my response above. And, I would invite you, at any time, to visit my home to witness one of the most original and correct assemblies of phonograph rarities that exist.

I'm still wondering how the maker of MM horns got around the Victor patents or have I missed something far more obvious? Have you got any pictures of MM horns directly coupled to Victor machines? It appears then that it is accepted as being "correct" for a MM horn to be used on a Victor machine this way?

I honestly doubt if anyone can verify what collars that the horns (Music Master) were actually outfitted with as they were leaving the production tables when they were made. I can verify that once a customer showed up in a music store and wanted that cute little "Baby" horn outfitted on the Victor II that they wanted as well, it would all just work itself out!!

Do I need to supply the rake?

That VI is really quite stunning. Is it worth sharing this picture elsewhere in the forum so others can view it? Many thanks. Although it isn't visible I assume that horn has a sleeve identical to the Victor spear-point type for mating to the Victor elbow?
