Disassembling a Vic IV Spring Barrel

I am trying to replace a spring in a Vic IV motor. GOt the spring barrel off but can't get the spring barrel shaft out. It seems there is a gear on the shaft that doesn't want to come off. It has a slot in it so I assume there is a little pin through the shaft that is nestled inside this slot. Any ideas on how to get this gear off the shaft?

Thanks!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

This motor is from a Vic IV ??. You need to tap the little gear off to remove the shaft pin. Since you are operating a "repair business"......you may want to consider investing in some books that could be invaluable to you. Call it insurance against hurting a customers machine.....if you know what I mean..... ;) :).

In order to get the little gear off the shaft I hold the single spring barrel with the shaft and gear pointing upwards. Make sure you hold it just above a work bench padded with a few rags or similar, so nothing gets damaged once it comes apart. Then I tap the shaft with a rubber mallet until the small gear slowly slides up on the shaft.
Good luck

Tried tapping, wouldn't budge. Might have to send it off to a real phono repair place.

Just finished regreasing the springs on an Edison Amberola 1A motor. Those are huge springs, the biggest I've seen, about 2" wide.

Cliff,

The slots in the gear go all the way through. There is a cross pin in the shaft that engages with those slots. Simply trying to drive the shaft out of the gear will not work since the cross pin will hit the face of the spring barrel behind the gear almost immediately. Slip the blades of two screwdrivers under each side of the gear, pulling it up as far as you can. Then, tap the shaft with a small hammer. The gear should begin move on the shaft. Run the screwdrivers up snuggly under the gear again and tap some more. Repeat this process until you can easily support the gear by its backside and drive the shaft out the rest of the way.
