Played on a green 1929 HMV 101 portable gramophone is Jack Albin & His Orchestra (as Lloyd Keating & His Music) on electric Harmony 1226-H (100423; matrix not listed in Rust's "American Dance Band Discography" but ca. July, 1930). Vocal is listed as by Tom Frawley.(another pseudonym?). This is very nice indeed!

Thank you, Adam, for playing those two selections on your two 101's!

Thoroughly entertaining, both!

Very enjoyable. :)

I am curious. I hear many good things about 101s. For those of you who may have a variety of portables, how does the sound of 101s compare with Victors, Brunswicks, etc. of the same period?

Clay, my Victor 1-5 has quite similarly good sound, but that has a restored brass Victor No.4 reproducer. Both are better than any Viva-tonal model I've owned (160, 163), but that's probably because the red rubber flange at the rear of those reproducers was dried and there were air leaks (this is a known problem with those American Columbia portables). I have also owned a Victor Orthophonic VV 2-65 which had nice sound, but probably not as good as the 101s. Frankly, I have found that my 101s have as nice sound as my 102s, and that's saying a lot. And the quality of construction of the HMV portables (both 101 and 102) was quite a bit better and more sophisticated than that of the others I've owned (including esp. the 1-5, which suffers from a cheap, underpowered motor and poorly-designed tonearm and crank entrance). I've never owned a Brunswick.

Clay,

For what it's worth, considering my machines; a 1906 Home model "C" reproducer, 1912 VV-VXI No. 2 reproducer, and 1917 VV-VIA N0.2 reproducr, the 101 (c. 1926), with an HMV #4 reproducer, quite literally blows them away. Much better dynamics and range, IMO.

I still need to replace the gaskets in the reproducer, but still the sound really amazes me. Yesterday, George pointed out the larger reproducer (I assume in proportion to sound tube and horn) as part of that equation.

Lovely sounding 101. The singer might be Irving Kaufman.

Hi Wolfe, hello to you, too! I've been away for a little while (on account of all kinds of private stuff I won't bore you with) but I'm back again.
