The Victor Talking Machine Company began as "Eldridge Johnson, Manufacturing Machinist". Even in the very beginning the firm made its own motors and reproducers. The "Burton" motors were made by Victor, as were the "Murray" speed controls which were used with some of them. I suspect that the names of these devices may derive from those of their designers in the Victor experimental shop.
