Hi, Has anyone had any success in repairing a fibre gear ? I have one on a main shaft of a Swiss motored horn gramophone and one section (about 1/3rd) of the gear is worn. I wondered if I filled it with epoxy resin and then filed the lines in it it would work ? Anyone ever repaired one ?

If you search this website for "fiber gear" you will find previous threads that discuss fiber gears and offer suggestions to replace them.

You ought to contact a few noted dealers such as Wyatt's Musical Americana or Ron Sitko. A few people have replicated those gears from plexiglass, nylon and also printed circuit boards. As last resort, a small machine shop might cut a duplicate using your existing part as a guide.

You really can't repair a fiber gear.

Is it a helical gear? (meaning, are the teeth parallel to the axis of the gear or at an angle, i.e. helix angle?)

I think I may have fixed it. I bought some epoxy putty which I put into the damaged area. While it was still flexible I turned the shaft against the spiral on the governor to cut the threads in it. Once it had cured, I filed it out to the same profile as the rest of the wheel and it seems to work. Time will tell whether it will be a permanent repair !
