I assume the 100rpm speed of the cylinder was to accomodate the longer than 2 minute time of the disc recording.

Actually you'd need to slow it down to capture a longer recording. I was wondering about the 100rpm speed too though.

the normal speed of a two minute cylinder is 160 rpm which gives you 2:15 of recording time on a standard Edison blank cylinder. if your machine is stable enough you can slow the machine to 144, 120, 100, 90, rpm etc. this will increase the recording time by almost twice. you can make a recording at 90 rpm that is four minutes plus, at 80 rpm you can make a full five minute recording, the slower the machine runs the poorer the results. but in this case the new recorder is quite efficient so even running 60 rpm slower than factory cylinders you get an exceptionally good cylinder recording that sounds like the disc recording.
