Does anyone have an original and repro cygnet horn elbow that they can compare the weight? I recently bought a repro elbow from Wyatt's and noticed that when mounted to my Music Master horn, the horn tilts towards the back as though the elbow is heavier than an original. I would have thought that when suspended by the hook, the whole thing would hang level.

They make 2 different cranes for cygnet horn machines. One is for a horizontal carriage and one for a regular c or h. If you have the wrong one, it will do exactly as you say yours is doing. Have any pictures? And also, do you have it put on right? The bottom section pointed out and away from the machine?

I am referring to the elbow for the horn, not the crane. I have the correct crane and know how it mounts.

I think Amberola makes a good point. A carriage which points the neck of the reproducer straight up will tip the bell of the horn slightly forward and down with the wrong crane. The opposite would be true with a carriage that points the reproducer at a 45 degree angle and a crane made for a vertical carriage. The reproduction Cygnet elbows appear to be very accurate replicas and I doubt if there is much, if any, difference in weight. Actually, I don't think any weight variation would make a difference in the positioning of the horn. The connection point at the reproducer is fixed and the point at the top of the crane is not going to vary much unless the spring is weak. Photos would help. Best wishes, Jerry Blais

I think Dave's talking about the horn hanging freely from the crane and before it connected to the reproducer.
I checked a few original Music Master horns and elbows and when they are hanging freely from the crane ( not connected at the reproducer ) they do hang straight. That's to say if you look at the rim of the bell from the side it's perpendicular, straight up and down and not tipped backwards or forwards. I weighed the grain painted elbow and it is 15 oz. on the postal scale which is very accurate. So I could see how a heavy elbow would change how a horn hangs if it's just hanging freely from the crane.

You stated exactly what my point is. I'd post a picture but I'm right in the middle of wood graining the elbow and can't mount it to the bell at the moment. I test fit the elbow last week and noticed it didn't hang straight. I bought the wooden Horn/bell from Edaurdo in Peru and have had some other fit problems with the repro elbow I got from Wyatt's. Eduardo only uses original elbows to test on his horns and he says they balance and fit fine with original elbows so I suspect my problems are with the repro elbow.

I now understand your question but I'd be more concerned about the appearance after the horn was hung from the crane and attached to the reproducer. Jerry

It's a bit much to expect 2 objects separated by 100 years to have the exact same properties - in fact, it is utterly impossible.

I bought this horn from a board member, and to my surprise it was doing just like you are talking about. After talking with Sitko, it seems they only made this horn for about 6 months. The bell hanger is built in the horn causing it to raise the carriage. I had to get a special crane for this one. Yours isn't like this one is it?

No, mine is a wood Music Master.
