For sale on Victoria, BC Craigslist:

Floor standing HMV gramophone, 1931, with 5A reproducer.

It may have been refinished, since I do not see a decal on the inside lid. I like the grille design!

Anyone know what model this is?

This machine is not an HMV. The No.5a soundbox has been crudely adapted to fit the tonearm.

The tag suggests that the machine is fitted with a Collaro motor, but HMV made their own.

So I wonder if HMV did not make it, then who did??

Is this machine familiar to anyone out there?

I think epigramophone has hit the nail on the head by reading the clue that tag has offered. An internet search has found the following wind-up gramophone made by Collaro.

The above is auction also pictured a tag like the one in the craigslisting. The motor board is similarly constructed and hardware too. The above has a logo plate identifying it as a Collaro. This may be the best information to go on for now.

This is from the craigslisting.
Does anyone have a clue as to what this thing does? :?
It's clearly above the turntable and does not appear to be part of it.

I'll going into the realm of fantasy, not knowing if this actually became a reality, and suggest that it is a record lifter.

It's an arm to trigger an autostop mechanism.

Thanks Orchorsol. I didn't think it tall enough for the tone arm to touch it.

This is what I was dreaming of...

Collaro Ltd were highly respected manufacturers. Both EMG and Expert fitted their motors, usually the D30 shown in this 1930 advertisement :
