A C19 key question.

Did the C19 Diamond Disc come with the dolphin key, or some other type?

I made the mistake of buying a dolphin key advertised as an Edison key for my C-250 and it didn't work. I later found out that dolphin keys were very popular keys for many types of furniture back then and the key I bought was not for a phonograph. The short dolphins keys for Edison fit the Amberola 1-A and 1-b, as well as the A-250s, etc.

The dolphin key from my A250 will work in the locks of my C19.
I suspect that most, if not all, the phonograph locks were off-the shelf generic-- likely only intended to keep the kids from damaging Mom and Dad's treasured machine and not meant to provide much in the way of real security. Old music boxes have similar locks.

Just started cleaning up the C19 I picked up and, by the way, those are just humongous spring barrels. 
The old boy is built like a tank!
Oh, and found the correct key on eBay. Thanks for all the feedback on that.

I have three keys for my Edison C19, Two "E" keys as pictured above, and one dolphin key. They all work and have the same key cutting. Dolphin keys were sold for Edison machines as well by jobbers back in the day during the period.
Originally, Diamond Disc machines only came with one Edison "E" key when purchased, and inside the crating. There was even a Edison check list of contents of the crating, On the list with the phonograph and other parts listed, (1) Edison Key.
The C250 as well as other Edison Diamond Disc players uses the same key.

Indeed! Luckily, the springs on my C-250 were in good condition and quiet, so I contented myself with shooting some white lithium grease in them, instead of cleaning & regreasing...FloridaClay wrote:Just started cleaning up the C19 I picked up and, by the way, those are just humongous spring barrels.
