I've found this on eBay, a "Steel needle sharpener".
What about it?

Does it actually say Steel Needle Sharpener on it somewhere? My Italian is a little rusty....
It looks like a thorn needle sharpener to me.

Announced as: "Affila aghi per grammofono" = "Gramophone needles sharpener". No steel mentioned...

I believe that sharpener (yes, for thorn needles) was made by Meltrope and sold as part of, or as an accessory for, a Fay Home Recorder attachment.

A Steel Needle Renewer (they should NOT be "sharp"!) would be a profitable and welcome invention.

The EMI archives contain a letter from a customer written in 1903, which reads as follows :
Dear Sirs,
Enclosed please find 360 genuine Gramophone needles. Please sharpen and return to me, letting me know as early as possible the cost, and I will send by return of post.

That's because, much like Royal Mail, EMI likes to take its time to consider these things very carefully. A very comprehensive response is somewhere in the pipeline, or should that be post?

I must confess that, in my youth, I used to re-point steel needles with a hand drill and a sharpening stone...
(Still, early Gramophone literature mentioned the possibility of doing much the same thing: possibly one of the reasons some of those Berliners ended up so worn?)
