When I talked to good friend Arthur Pare on Saturday,April 5th he told me something surprising about Victor 19690,"Ukelele Lady"by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra. The label says"vocal refrain".I was surprised to learn that the vocal was done by a black quartet,VERY unusual for a white band to have black vocalists in 1925.I have Victor 19690,but I can't find my copy.Does anyone have a spare?edisonplayer

After visiting the Victor discography site, ( http://victor.library.ucsb.edu/ )and some searching of (online) discographies, books and historic newspapers, I can't come up with a reference to "the Southern Fall Colored Quartet," other than the fact that they were listed as the recording artists on Ukelele Lady.

I'm wondering if they were just the usual suspects out of Victor's stock recording quartets re-named for the session? The voices, especially the bass, sounds very familiar. The first group I thought of when I got my copy was "The Revelers." (In fact, according to what was posted here -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VhJfJ-7aw4 -- that's exactly who they were, though he doesn't cite a source.)

Could well be. The "Revelers" did bounce around quite a bit and work under different names.
