Alright, back to the VV-IX, some help needed.

Hi all,

While I'm waiting to hear back from the sellers of the VV-107, I figured I'd get started on this VV-IX. It's an early one, made on June 27th, 1911. From the serial, it was likely the last day they made these with the bullet brake, as they switched 17 units later.

Anyway, in preparation for stripping/fixing the cabinet, I'd like to remove these....any way to do so without gouging the mess out of the cabinet?

Also, is there a straightforward way to remove the cast iron horn from the cabinet while I'm working on it? It's loose as it is, but I'm not sure I can really remove it.

It would appear I'm missing the bracket assembly for the tonearm as well, but it must be different from all my others. The tonearm sits inside the horn on this one, and the bracket must simply go around the tonearm, as opposed to supporting/rotating it.

What should I be on the lookout for? Would anyone with an early VV-IX be so kind as to snap a couple photos of theirs that I can use as a reference? I have a 1915 model IX, but it's very different from this one.

The tonearm support genuinely puzzles me, as all the skinny tonearms I come across have the traditional support that is mounted to the cabinet via three screws, whereas mine does not have the provisions for one. I'm wondering what kind of bracket I need, but I can't seem to come across anything conclusive.


The same with the motor, I've been told I likely need the "J" motor, seen here, but for the life of me, I can't see how it would work, unless my machine is more hacked up than I thought.

If my crank was located near the rear of the machine, it would work perfectly fine. But with my crank at the front, there's no way that motor could possibly work. I'd assume the speed control would be located on the front right corner (nearest the crank) when the motorboard is placed in the cabinet, and if so, the adjustment lever would need to be right where the crank goes into the spring barrel.

Am I missing something here?

My VV-IX has the expected tone are support you talk about, and it looks like the arm you have was designed for that support, so I am a bit puzzled also. Mine is a later one than yours, however.

After viewing the thread above, it would appear all it is, is a black circular trim ring. Would anyone happen to have one in their parts bin anywhere? I'd definitely be interested in purchasing it.

Wouldn't it also have the curved back that comes-up and holds the top-pivot, or was that a later design ?

It would appear the earliest machines did not have a back bracket, and just sat in the horn, with a black surround where the tone arm meets the cabinet.

I have one of these that I'm working on now, 1912 version without the bullet stop, but it has the same tonearm, and it is just a flat metal piece (like a flat doughnut) that sits around the tone arm base atop the back of the cabinet. Motorboard is a smaller square that fits onto brackets on the cabinet. George Vollema and I had a very helpful exchange about the phonograph, and he sold me the ring.
