My Edison suitcase Home, s/n H14809, currently has a "winged" C reproducer. Wondering if it should be an Automatic? What say you?

I think they would of all came with either the automatic or model B reproducer. The winged C certainly was a factory upgrade option, one would purchase when that option was available, think though it came with an auto.

The very earliest suitcase Homes had Standard Speakers, but only for a short time. Thereafter they used Automatics. Even a B would be an upgrade. But Edison was famous for making it possible for owners of older machines to upgrade to newer features, hence 2/4 minute adapters on some suitcase Homes, with H reproducer. He was very different from manufacturers today who like to make electronics that are obsolete by the time they reach stores. Keep upgrading a computer 10 years after first sale? Fuhgeddaboudit.

Yes, it should have an Automatic if you want factory setup. Serial 14XXX is pretty early......

Unlike Mr. Gates and other modern-day ripoff artists,
Edison had a heart! Edison did not just do the things
he did, and bring his products to market for the sole
greedy purpose of lining his pockets with people's money.

To Edison, it was much more than this. Edison was
loyal to his customers and wanted them all to be
happy with all of his products. Edison wanted his stuff
to bring joy to people. He wanted his older products
to continue to be useful years after they had been
superseded by later versions.

Not like today where the stuff is rendered obsolete
and tossed into the dumpster only a few years (at most)
after it was brand new!

This is a very large part (I feel) of what is wrong
with our totally wasteful and unsustainable "lifestyle"
that we have now.

Things would be much better for everyone, if things
were built more soundly, out of materials such as
wood, steel, and brass, rather than plastic everywhere.

Yes, they all should take a lesson from Edison.
He knew what he was doing.

These clowns who write computer operating systems
these days and make and sell products that are
so quickly obsolete are not making people happy.
They are (in my humble opinion) ripping people off.

Think about it: We still use Edison's machines
and attachments all these years later, and all they
require is a little TLC and they still work just fine.

Try that in another 100+ years with any of the
electronic junk made today.

It all depends: do you want your machine to be 'factory new', or do you want to reflect the history of the machine?

Bill,

You make an excellent point. I would however be more apt to preserve it's history during its time of original use, versus the history that the collector before me made on it.
